"No Promises" by Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato - Single Review

American electronic music DJ trio Cheat Codes have yet to crack the Billboard Hot 100 with any of their 12 superb, official releases, but they might just be betting on lucky number 13. The Los Angeles-based artists have paired up with vocal powerhouse Demi Lovato for "No Promises", a subtle pop/EDM project that shines a light on a memorable, flirtatious encounter. Following in the footsteps of recent releases with the likes of Selena Gomez and Alessia Cara, infectious production supports commendable vocal performances of Lovato and the trio themselves.

"No Promises" is a tad dramatic, referencing sharp knives cutting into bone and jumping into a bottomless ocean in order to get the lovesick feeling of a romantic first experience across to the listeners. Lovato kicks things off, contemplating and balancing the risk and possible hardship that could come with starting a new relationship. Though the songwriting could be perceived as over the top to some, it's an endearing expression that would easily resonate with many.

Falling head over heels in love is not new subject matter for the music-consuming public, but the message of simply going with the flow, relying on chemistry and expecting nothing in return is an intriguing concept for a romance song. "I just wanna dive in the water, with you, baby, we can't see the bottom, it's so easy to fall for each other, I'm just hoping we catch one another," Lovato belts optimistically alongside the DJ trio on the pre-chorus before the radio-ready hook comes through.

The airwaves are already crowded with similarly structured dance tracks, especially ones that feature a female guest vocalist, however "No Promises" finds a special way to stand out. The ability to set itself apart lies with the vocal delivery of Lovato. We've heard the "Skyscraper" songstress let loose on rousing piano ballads, we've heard her give sultry, electro/rock performances a la "Cool for the Summer", but her work here lies somewhere in between: fragile yet filled with excitement.

The recently released "No Promises" serves two important purposes and accomplishes both. Positive critical reception plays well for a proper mainstream introduction to the talents of Cheat Codes. In addition, with the lack of commercial attention paid to GRAMMY-nominated Confident, the passionate effort calms Demi's eager fan base until we are all finally treated to DL6. The collaboration was unexpected, but it paves a road moving forward, hopefully with more releases together for all involved.
